PMDF is a high performance, standards-based Internet messaging product suite that has ensured efficient and secure communications to messaging environments for over 10 years. PMDF provides a complete cross-platform messaging solution for organizations of all sizes.

The underlying philosophy of PMDF is that of adherance to Internet messaging standards and that no message should ever be dropped. The PMDF developers have taken a leading role in many of the relevant Internet RFCs (documents that specify how Internet software should operate) and indeed PMDF was one of the very first mail products to support MIME.

PMDF Modules

The core of the PMDF product suite is PMDF-MTA, which provides the following features:

• Enhanced SMTP client & server
• IMAP4 server
• POP3 server
• Pine email client
• Web-based monitoring and user configuration
• Message filtering based on the Sieve programming language
• Message filtering on MAIL FROM, RCPT TO phases of SMTP dialogue
• IP-level access controls (i.e. accept or reject connections
  on the basis of the IP address)
• Alphanumeric pager gateway
• Enhanced command-line mail user agent designed as a replacement for
  VMS MAIL
• and many others

PMDF-MTA runs on OpenVMS VAX and Alpha, Solaris, Tru64 Unix and WindowsNT & Windows2000.

PMDF-MTA makes an ideal email gateway or firewall for your organisation. Indeed, Microsoft’s Security Operations Guide for Exchange 2000 Server recommends “to protect your backend Exchange Server from attack by using a separate SMTP gateway”.

• PMDF-TLS provides for encrypted communication between POP, IMAP and
  SMTP clients and the PMDF-MTA server.
• PMDF-FAX is an email-to-fax gateway capable of driving hundreds of
  Class-2 fax modems, to both send & receive faxes. (OpenVMS only.)
• PMDF-X400 provides connectivity between Internet messaging and
  X.400 mail servers.
• PMDF-MR handles connections to the VAX Message Router package, used
  by All-In-One on VAX and Alpha systems. It's the only reliable way
  to hook an All-In-One Alphaserver to the Internet. (OpenVMS only.)
• PMDF-MB400 links Internet messaging to the MailBus 400 product.
• PMDF-DIRSYNC ensures all your user email directories (LDAP, Notes,
  Exchange, etc) are synchronised so that all users have a common
  global addressbook.

Virus Filtering

PMDF does not provide a virus filter, but it does provide the mechanisms to hook in a virus filter of your choice. In particular, many sites on both OpenVMS and Unix have successfully integrated the Sophos SAVI engine into their PMDF configurations to provide reliable virus filtering of all mail messages.

Spam Filtering

PMDF comes with many features to enable controlled spam filtering based on the remote system's IP address, source and destination addresses, and message content.

These facilities are not automatically configured or updated so for improved protection we recommend PreciseMail Anti-Spam, another product of Process Software. PMAS can run on the same system as PMDF-MTA or can be run standalone.
